A school roof collapsed in Peshawar, Pakistan, killing at least 35 people and injuring over 50, according to officials. The incident occurred on Thursday in the Dir Colony neighborhood.
The privately run Al-Khair Education Center was the site of the disaster. At least 34 children and one teacher were confirmed dead, with more than 45 children injured. Rescue workers struggled to reach those trapped under the rubble.
Authorities announced an investigation into the collapse. The school’s owner was arrested. Officials cited structural weakness and overloading due to construction work as possible causes.
The death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue. Most of the victims were children under 13. Hospital officials reported several children feared trapped.
This is the second major school disaster in Peshawar this year. Previous incidents have raised concerns about building safety and regulatory oversight.
The government has promised compensation for the victims’ families. Emergency services were overwhelmed by the scale of the disaster.
The collapse highlights ongoing challenges in infrastructure safety and education sector management in the region. Investigations are ongoing to determine full responsibility.
