The UN migration agency warned that nearly all residents of Gaza need tents or assistance with shelter ahead of winter, as the El Niño weather phenomenon threatens heavier rainfall. The IOM said the El Niño, potentially the strongest on record, could further weaken unsafe buildings and cause flooding due to the enclave’s damaged drainage systems. Supplies remain scarce because of Israeli restrictions.
The agency reported that almost 2 million people in Gaza are at risk of displacement or require emergency shelter. The El Niño is expected to bring increased rainfall, worsening conditions in an area already struggling with infrastructure damage and limited resources. The IOM highlighted that the situation is exacerbated by the ongoing Israeli military presence and the resulting restrictions on aid.
The crisis follows years of conflict and humanitarian challenges in Gaza. The 7 October 2023 attacks by Hamas and the subsequent Israeli offensive have left the territory in ruins, with many families living in temporary shelters. Reports from local residents describe a deep sense of despair, with many facing hunger, disease, and the loss of homes. The situation has deteriorated further as the winter season approaches, increasing the risk of flooding and displacement.
The UN has called for urgent international support to address the shelter crisis and improve access to essential services. However, aid efforts have been hampered by ongoing tensions and restrictions. The El Niño’s impact is expected to compound existing challenges, making the humanitarian situation in Gaza increasingly dire.
