A Houthi ballistic missile targeting Riyadh was intercepted and destroyed by Saudi-led coalition defenses on Wednesday, according to a statement by Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki. The missile was shot down before it could reach its target, preventing potential casualties. Four people were injured by falling debris in Riyadh after earlier Houthi missile strikes were intercepted.
The Saudi Civil Defense lifted earlier danger warnings for Riyadh and Al-Kharj Governorate following the interception. The incident occurred as part of ongoing tensions between the Houthi rebels and Saudi Arabia. The coalition has been conducting strikes on Houthi-held areas in Yemen, which have intensified in recent weeks.
The conflict in Yemen has escalated with both sides increasing military activity. Saudi-led strikes on Houthi positions have targeted what the coalition describes as "vital assets." In response, Houthi forces have launched attacks on Saudi territory, including a missile strike that hit a Saudi Aramco building in Dhahran. These actions have raised concerns about the potential for further regional instability.
The ongoing conflict has also impacted critical infrastructure, including oil export routes. Escalating hostilities threaten to disrupt energy supplies and deepen the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. With no signs of de-escalation, the situation remains volatile, with both sides showing no immediate willingness to halt hostilities.
