The Pakistan Contemporary Art Biennale, the country’s most significant modern art event, has been canceled for the second time in three years. Organizers announced the decision in late September, citing a sharp decline in funding due to ongoing regional conflicts. The event, which typically draws thousands of visitors and international curators, was scheduled to take place in Lahore in early November.
Funding for the biennale has dwindled by over 60% since 2022, according to organizers. This decline is attributed to reduced government support and private donations, both of which have been impacted by the escalating tensions in the region. The cancellation follows a similar decision in 2023, when the event was postponed due to financial constraints.
The biennale has been a key platform for emerging and established Pakistani artists, offering international exposure and fostering cultural dialogue. Its cancellation marks a setback for the local art scene, which has already faced challenges from economic instability and political uncertainty. Organizers hope to reschedule the event in 2025, pending improved funding conditions.
