Yemeni government forces claim to have regained control of the Bab al-Mandab strait in a military operation targeting Houthi rebels, according to a spokesperson. The operation, named “Dawn of Yemen,” involved the Giants Brigades and Nation’s Shield Forces. These units reportedly took control of the strategic waterway and secured key infrastructure, including Dhu Bab airport and the road linking Dhu Bab with Mokha.
The operation follows recent clashes in the area, with government forces recapturing the Dhubab district near the Bab al-Mandab strait from Houthi rebels. This offensive is part of a broader military campaign to retake territory seized by the Houthis last month. The Saudi-led coalition has also warned the Houthis over attacks on holy sites in Makkah and Madinah, as Yemen continues its efforts to push back rebel positions.
The Bab al-Mandab strait, a critical maritime chokepoint, has been a focal point of conflict between Yemeni government forces and the Houthi rebels. Control of the area is vital for regional trade and security. The recent gains by government forces mark a significant shift in the ongoing conflict, though the situation remains volatile. The operation underscores the continued escalation of military activity in the region, with both sides vying for strategic advantage.
