Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met in New York during the UN General Assembly, according to Sharif’s office. The meeting took place as the US-Iran conflict, which began after US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February, continues to disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
The conflict has caused significant disruption to global oil supplies, as the Strait of Hormuz is a key passage for about a fifth of the world’s oil. Pakistan has called for an end to the fighting and urged all parties to de-escalate tensions.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to address the UN General Assembly in New York. His speech comes amid international calls for accountability, including from Amnesty International, which has urged the US and other nations to enforce an ICC arrest warrant against Netanyahu.
Despite the focus on the US-Iran conflict, other diplomatic discussions also took place during the UN session, highlighting the diverse range of global issues being addressed.
