Syrian Airlines announced it will restart direct flights between Berlin and Damascus on November 10. This will be the airline’s first such service in over a decade, disrupted by the civil war’s impact on aviation. The route aims to help the approximately one million Syrians living in Germany reconnect with their homeland.
The decision follows similar efforts by other airlines to restore travel links between Syria and Europe. Recent months have seen increased diplomatic and logistical efforts to normalize air travel, reflecting broader attempts to reconnect Syria with the international community. The Berlin-Damascus route is expected to operate weekly, with flights departing from Berlin-Tegel Airport and arriving at Damascus International Airport.
The resumption of flights marks a small but significant step in rebuilding Syria’s aviation sector. Since the outbreak of the civil war in 2011, most international flights to and from Syria have been suspended. The return of direct services between Damascus and Germany is part of a wider trend of gradual normalization, though challenges remain in restoring full connectivity. The move also highlights the growing importance of diaspora communities in shaping diplomatic and economic ties.
