The Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, arrived in Atlanta on Friday to attend the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. The gathering, hosted in the United States, includes discussions on geopolitical developments, maritime security, energy, food security, global trade, and supply chains. The meeting also aims to strengthen international cooperation and multilateral efforts to address global economic challenges.
The event faced a significant disruption when European foreign ministers refused to be photographed with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. This led to the cancellation of the traditional group photo session. The decision came after several European delegates threatened to walk out of the session if Lavrov was included in the photo. The United States, hosting the meeting, opted to cancel the plan rather than risk further tensions.
This marks the first time in recent G20 history that a group photo has been canceled due to political sensitivities. The meeting, which is a precursor to the G20 leaders’ summit hosted by President Donald Trump in December, has seen deep rifts among diplomats, including those from China and Russia, over global crises and security concerns. The absence of the group photo highlights the growing divisions within the G20, as nations struggle to find common ground on pressing international issues.
